Hello, my name is Daryse!
In 2019, I made one of the best decisions of my life—leaving behind the familiar sights of the USA to embark on a thrilling new journey in Guangzhou, China, as a teacher with English 1. Little did I know, that this leap of faith would lead to an even greater adventure—continuing my teaching career with English 1 in the heart of Indonesia! From the moment I first explored my childhood city, I knew that my heart belonged to something bigger, something grander. I was born to explore, to immerse myself in the beauty of the world, and English 1 became the bridge that made it all possible.
Each chapter of this journey has been filled with rich culture, delicious food, breathtaking landscapes, and the warmest, most incredible people. And the best part? I get to live out my passion for teaching while experiencing life in another country—what more could I ask for?
Now, let me tell you, weather was a BIG factor in my decision. Growing up in a place with four seasons (with two of them being absolutely not my favourite), I knew I had to escape the cold. So, I chose the sun-soaked cities of Guangzhou and Jakarta, where it’s always summer. Five years later, I have zero regrets! Waking up to bright skies and warm breezes every day? Yes, please!
Speaking of great decisions—my apartment in Jakarta is an absolute dream. One of the best perks of living abroad is having fully furnished apartments, which made my transition seamless. Being on a higher floor means I get to enjoy stunning city views, especially when fireworks light up the sky during celebrations. And let’s not forget my resort-style amenities—an inviting pool, a cozy movie theater, a well-equipped gym, and so much more. But beyond all of that, it’s the wonderful staff that truly make it feel like home. Every morning, I’m greeted with smiles and warmth, making my days that much brighter. And the icing on the cake? My apartment is just a short walk from my centre, giving me the perfect opportunity to soak in the vibrant energy of the city every single day.
Work Life
Even though I packed up and left the USA, my work schedule still has a familiar rhythm to it. My hours are perfectly balanced, giving me ample time to plan engaging lessons, chat with my amazing coworkers, and create unforgettable classroom experiences for my students. Since I start work in the late morning, I get to enjoy slow, peaceful mornings—no rush hour, no frantic dashes out the door. Instead, I savor my breakfast, soak in the calm, and ease into my day with a clear mind.
Stepping into the workplace, I’m instantly greeted by the buzz of excitement—laughter, brainstorming, and the occasional debate about where we should grab lunch that day. (Food is serious business here, let me tell you!) I’m an organiser by nature, so I love starting my Mondays with a clear plan for the week, making sure I’m ready to give my students the best learning experience possible. And when Friday rolls around, I do a little desk tidying ritual—it’s my way of setting myself up for success in the upcoming week.
Before each class, I take a deep breath, channel my energy, and prepare to match the enthusiasm of my students. I remember their interests, their quirks, and their favourite topics, crafting questions that will spark joy and curiosity in them. Seeing their confidence grow, hearing their laughter, and watching them light up as they learn—that’s my why.
And when the workday wraps up? It’s time to unwind! I take my usual stroll home, maybe grab a little sweet treat from my favourite local shop and settle in for a cozy evening. At least once or twice a week, you’ll find me out with my coworkers—grabbing dinner, sipping coffee, or enjoying live music at a local spot. The work-life balance here is nothing short of amazing.
Days Off and Holidays
If there’s one thing I’ve embraced in Jakarta, it’s the art of exploration. My days off are dedicated to new experiences, new connections, and of course, new food. I thrive on discovering hidden gems and let me tell you—this city never runs out of surprises. Whether I’m wandering into an artsy café, stumbling upon a buzzing street market, or tagging along with newfound friends on an impromptu adventure, every day feels like a new page in my travel diary.
Holidays are the perfect time to challenge yourself—whether it’s trying a new form of transportation or embarking on a weekend getaway. My most memorable experience? Taking a trip to another city as well as booking a private tour guide—a solid 10/10 experience!
Of course, amidst all the exploring, I make sure to schedule some me-time—whether it’s catching up on a good book, trying my hand at a new hobby, or simply recharging after a busy week. Lately, I’ve been fully embracing my inner foodie, and I’ve even found myself a partner-in-crime for food adventures. If there’s one thing I can promise you—it’s that you will never run out of incredible dishes to try here.
Final Thoughts
More than anything, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been part of my journey—from my incredible L.M.T. family in China to my growing community in Jakarta. This adventure wouldn’t be the same without you.
Living in Jakarta has taught me so much—not just about the world, but about myself. I’ve found a deeper sense of inner peace, a passion for food I never knew I had, and a renewed love for travel that continues to grow. And to my Sunter crew who have become my second family—you inspire me every day, not just in how you show up for me, but in how you show up for your students. You are the heart and soul of this experience, and I’m so grateful to be on this journey with you.
Looking back, the only regret I have is not discovering this opportunity sooner. But you know what? Timing is everything, and right now, I’m exactly where I need to be. Teaching at English 1 has been one of the greatest joys of my life. Watching my students grow into confident, expressive individuals? That’s my trophy. Forming friendships that feel like home? That’s the gift that keeps on giving. And waking up in a city that’s full of life, culture, and warmth? That’s pure magic.
So, if you’re looking for a fresh start, an exciting adventure, or just a change of scenery—take the leap. Join English 1 with an open heart and an open mind, and I promise you, it will be an experience you’ll cherish forever.
